Alumni of one of the most elite and reputed educational
institutions of the world: St. Stephens and Oxford University, an artist of the pristine Dastangoi art and the co-director of the renowned movie ‘Peepli live’, Mahmood Farooqui was recently convicted for sexually assaulting and raping a 35 year old American research scholar on 28march’2015.
He has been awarded a punishment of 7 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 55,000 by Sanjiv Jain, the judge of Additional Sessions Court.
The news of an intellectual ‘Bollywood filmmaker’ committing such a crime has left the world amused. His action on the night of 28 March was a scar in the American Scholar’s life. It actually took her two and a half months to recover from the fact that a close friend had assaulted her sexually and file an FIR against the action. The lady was questioned a lot for the delayed FIR report.

So, what is the answer of the sexist behaviour of a man who enacts stage performances on injustice and human rights?

This signifies nothing but ‘hypocrisy’. Why isn’t Sonam Kapoor who is often known to voice her opinion has kept her mouth shut this time? Why can’t we see the Bollywood blasting? Has the tag of an author, writer and intellectual artist stopped them?

How does the intellect of the man erase the fact that he is a rapist?

Instead of mincing our words by saying, ‘It was a small drunken mistake’ or ‘He is such an educated man’, let us confront the fact that he is a “Rapist” who overpowered his masculinity on the lady.

Let us accept that his intelligence and talent gave him the disability to hear a ‘No’ from a woman. Education and closeness never negates a heinous crime.

Whatever may be the credentials or great achievements of a man, his character stands out as an introduction only if he respects women under all circumstances.
