Sitting in the Community complex, you notice the unsupervised 12-year-old riveted to his iPhone with his wide-eyed friend looking on. Walking through the mall you see a group of young-adult ladies seemingly oblivious to surroundings as they stroll together, each focused on their cellphones.
On the very last benches of the classrooms, one can easily spot students clamouring and chatting in vociferousness, while continuously staring at their phones. Stopping at the intersection you glance over and observe a crowd of grown-ups basking in the glow of their phones.
Mobile phones and youth are everywhere. Phew!
The question is: “What are they looking at?”
There’s no denying that the phenomena at hand, Sexting, is emerging as a new trend amongst the youth.
Sexting refers to exchange of sexually explicit photos, images, text messages, or emails via cellphone or other means of communication.
However, today, sexting makes use of different smartphone apps including Snapchat, Kik, Instagram, Vine, Viber, WhatsApp, Facebook, Tinder, Blendr and Line. Selfie nude images, videos and sexually graphic texts are all examples of exchanges taking place.
S E X T I N G : E V E R Y B O D Y DOES IT
1 in 5 of the young-adult generation does it, according to Bill Alpert of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.
“The primary reason young people give is they say this is a fun or flirtatious activity,” Alpert says. “Girls also mention the second primary reason that they do this as a sexy present for their boyfriends.
DOWNLOADING HIDDEN SEXTING APPS
Secret sexting apps have been uncovered as an alarming new trend for the youth, all thanks to sex being a taboo in India that mere mention of it causes stomach ache to many. These apps are often called “vault apps” which allow users to inconspicuously store nude photos or videos on their smartphones.
Often the apps are disguised by unsuspecting icons like a calculator app that functions like a calculator. Only the person who downloaded it knows how to unlock it with a secret passcode.
SEXTING AS PART OF GROWING UP
Sexting has become part of growing up in modern day America.”It makes it harder to say no because it’s like, ‘Oh why not, just send a pic.
‘ But it shouldn’t be that casual,” Sophia told CBS News correspondent Jericka Duncan. According to Dr. Kristin Perry, a psychologist and founder of parenting resource Inparentis, “sexting is the new flirting”
A PROCESS- AN ART
A lot of sexting starts on apps like Instagram and Snapchat, where direct messages are sent to a girl who then exchanges other info, like Kik ID, phone number and so on,” says a Sexting addict.
“Once sexting starts it can get sexually exciting and evolves into sending explicit selfies to each other as part of the chat. It can even turn into mutual masturbation,” openly admits Ravi. Indian women and men openly admit they happily engage and don’t mind it.
Nevertheless, for those who are comfortable with sexting, they need to always practice safety. This includes not showing your face in photos, using apps which do not store photos, avoid sexting if you are drunk or intoxicated, definitely stay away from stranger chats and delete conversation history unless you really want to keep them.
Therefore, as technology and apps evolve, there is no doubt sexting will increase even more in popularity, and future generations may well use very different ways to express this kind of sexual interaction
