Students say in how well a teacher teaches or how regular she is important not just for the betterment of students but the faculty, the future batch, and specially teachers who really focus on their work and student’s future.
This is happening for the first time that college and varsity students will have a say in evaluation of teachers as the Smriti Irani led HRD ministry has decided to bring fundamental changes in the way the performance of those in the teaching profession is assessed.
“According to this change in process students who have an attendance of 75 per cent, will be able to give feedback of their teachers. Regarding their regularity, their teaching process , as it is mentioned in the norm that the predominant weightage in evaluating teachers has been given to their teaching, learning and evaluating capacity”, says an official.
But why is this change coming up? Why students are being given such a responsibility?
This change, as mentioned above, being important for betterment of education department is also required as a 30 per cent weightage was given to co-curricular activities and another 30 per cent to research because of which
many teachers’ bodies have agitated against the API system which was introduced in 2010 as it was often perceived to be not fair for many.
“The result of making research an essential component on the basis of which a teacher would be assessed and promoted, was that a lot of substandard in not very significant journals took place.”, an official was quoted as saying.
Furthermore, reducing the rigidity it is decided that co-curricular activities and research would be measured separately as well as together and there will be no capping in research.
Activities like presentation of paper on various subjects will also be given weightage.
With this, the main focus would surely depend on how well a teacher teaches and how well the future of our country is being built.
Hoping this change turns out to be great for student as well as for the teaching facility and students who are given such opportunity to reward teachers according to their performance use it in an appropriate way.
