They organized a 10-day performing arts festival called, ‘Malang’ from 9th to 18th March 2016 in Delhi which received applauds from theatre-lovers in the Capital. In January 2017, Vayam performed two back-to-back shows of its original stage production, ‘1500 ka Dost’ and it was well-appreciated in theater circle and received great feedback. The play that highlights the sweet bond of friendship and its modern-day challenges, won all hearts. Vayam is all set to bring back another performance of its much-celebrated play, ‘1500 ka Dost’ at British Council of India in New Delhi, this March.
Don’t we all remember those essays that we used to get to write about ‘Friendship’ in early school days! We always made sure to use words like ‘unconditional love’, the spirit of ‘sharing and caring’ in order to get better grades. But the truth of that time was that only a few of our mates were really the best ones, that those who we would write the essays about, have now merely become names in our memory, as years have passed. Even with a dozen of friends on our list, some were a little less than the best, some were not more than just pencil sharing buddies and some, we could die for. The hierarchy was in place. The hierarchy is still in place but now the categories have become more profound, outlined and quantifiable than ever before. With a bevy of social media platforms, friends have now segregated into Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp friends. These categories often come out evidently loud in front of us when we are in the process of picking up the right birthday or marriage gift for a friend.
The basic rules remain pretty simple, though! The ones inviting through a WhatsApp message or an email are the basic Rs. 1100 category friends and a mixer grinder or an electric Iron should do the deal for these. The Rs. 2100 category belongs to those friends who send an invitation with a stunning marriage card and a box of sweets. Finally, there is the rare Rs. 5100 category and in the marriage of friends belonging to this category, you are likely to step into another realm of comfort and happiness where you can be spotted doing a funny dance with a Rs. 100 note stuck in your mouth and taking weird selfies with everyone in attendance.
‘1500 का दोस्त’ is a play that attempts to unravel the definition and categorization of friendship in the contemporary times, where audiences strike a chord with the characters, as the longing to meet old friends and reminiscing friendship, takes over. We have collaborated with the NGO, ‘Yes! We Can’, that supports & promotes the cause of a disabled friendly society. We have the privilege of sharing the stage with some very talented, differently-abled individuals in the performance of this play. It is a constructive partnership & is meant to sensitize the general public & bring specially-abled into the mainstream with a strong belief that-
‘DISABILITY IS THE INABILITY TO SEE ABILITY’.
What: ‘1500 का दोस्त’ – Because life is friendship and friendship is life.
